Armadillidium vulgare is the classic “roly-poly” many people grew up finding under rocks and logs. It’s one of the most tolerant, low-maintenance species available, and its trademark ability to roll into a tight ball (called conglobation) makes it a fun species to observe.
Why This Species Is Great for Beginners
A. vulgare tolerates handling and enclosure inconsistency better than almost any other isopod. It’s an excellent choice if you want a forgiving species while you’re still learning substrate and humidity basics.
