P. laevis breeds faster than many other beginner species, making it satisfying for new keepers who want to see colony growth within the first couple of months.

Enclosure Setup

Use the standard substrate approach from our enclosure setup guide. P. laevis is slightly more sensitive to very dry conditions than Porcellio scaber, so keep an eye on moisture more consistently.

Humidity Considerations

Aim for the higher end of the typical range — 70–90% humidity. Letting the substrate dry out completely for extended periods can slow breeding activity.

Feeding

Follow the standard diet in our feeding guide. Given their faster growth rate, this species benefits from slightly more frequent supplemental feeding (every 3-4 days rather than weekly) as the colony expands.

Scaling Your Colony
