Porcellio scaber is one of the most widely kept isopod species in the hobby, and for good reason — it’s forgiving, adaptable, and breeds readily even under imperfect conditions. The “Dairy Cow” morph, with its distinct white-and-black patterning, is the most popular variety sold to beginners.
Why Porcellio scaber Is Beginner-Friendly
Unlike more sensitive species, P. scaber tolerates a wide humidity range and doesn’t punish minor care mistakes the way rarer Cubaris morphs do. This makes it an ideal first species if you’re still learning to read your enclosure’s moisture and feeding needs.
Enclosure Setup
Follow the general substrate mix covered in our enclosure setup guide — coco fiber, leaf litter, and a piece of decaying wood. P. scaber does well with a moderate humidity gradient rather than uniformly soggy substrate.
Temperature and Humidity
Room temperature (68–75°F) is fine. Aim for 60–80% humidity — on the drier end of what most isopods tolerate, which is part of why this species is so forgiving for beginners still learning to gauge moisture levels.
Feeding
P. scaber readily eats the full range of foods covered in our feeding guide — fish flakes, vegetable scraps, and leaf litter. They’re not picky eaters, which adds to their beginner appeal.
Breeding Notes
Colonies establish quickly under stable conditions. Expect to see juveniles (“mancae”) within a few months of a healthy setup. See our breeding basics guide for what to expect as your colony grows.
