Choosing the right species is the single biggest factor in isopod-keeping success. Some species tolerate beginner mistakes easily; others punish inconsistent humidity or substrate with die-offs. Here are the most forgiving species to start with.
1. Porcellio scaber (“Dairy Cow” isopods)
One of the hardiest species in the hobby. Tolerates a wide humidity range, breeds readily, and handles minor care mistakes without dying off. The “Dairy Cow” morph (white and black patterning) is the most common variety sold to beginners.
2. Armadillidium vulgare (common pill bugs / “Powder Blue”)
These are the classic “roly-poly” isopods many people recognize from childhood. They roll into a tight ball when threatened (a trait called conglobation) and are extremely tolerant of handling and enclosure inconsistency.
3. Porcellio laevis (“Dalmatian” isopods)
Fast breeders and highly adaptable to different substrate types. A good choice if you want to see colony growth quickly, though they’re slightly more sensitive to very dry conditions than P. scaber.
4. Armadillidium klugii (“Cherry” isopods)
A step up in care difficulty but still manageable for a second or third species. Known for vivid orange/red coloring, they need slightly more consistent humidity than the species above.
Species to Avoid as a First Isopod
Hold off on rarer Cubaris species, high-humidity specialists, and expensive designer morphs until you’ve successfully kept a hardy species through a full breeding cycle. These often have narrower humidity tolerances and are more expensive to lose to a beginner mistake.
